HOLSTEINWORLDPRODUCTIONS.COM

WAE 2012

Tulare, Calif. - The Airoso family will celebrate its 100th anniversary of dairying in California with a dairy consignment sale at World Ag Expo in Tulare on February 16. The sale, which will showcase some of the best genetic opportunities that Holstein and Jersey breeds have to offer, is the first-ever dairy sale at World Ag Expo.

In total, 85 Holsteins and 15 Jerseys will sell next month in World Ag Expo’s Entertainment Pavilion. A preview will begin at 2:00 p.m., followed by the auction at 4:00 p.m. After the conclusion of the sale, dinner will be served followed by live entertainment by Michael Peterson and Chaparral.

The Airoso family, who came to the United States from Portugal’s Azores islands in 1912, began by milking a small heard by hand in the early 1900s.

“My great grandfather came to this country in 1912 along with his four sons and settled near Corcoran, California where they began milking 150 cows by hand,” said Joey Airoso, the sale’s host. “We’ve developed a passion for breeding great cows that last with high production and good components.”

All proceeds from the sale’s first lot, Air-Osa Passion for AG-Red, will be donated to the Ag Warriors program which will benefit veterans in search of long-term careers in agriculture.

“We really believe in this program and want to play a role in supporting veterans who have done so much for our country,” said Airoso.  ”Agriculture is one of the most important industries in this country, and it’s nice to be able to partner with veterans who are interested in, and appreciate what we’re doing.”

2012 New York All Breeds Convention

McEVOY TO LEAD NY HOLSTEIN

Charlie McEvoy is the new president, succeeding jim Perrotti

Charlie McEvoy, Marathon, NY was elected president of the NY Holstein Association at the annual meeting held Jan. 21 in Syracuse, NY.  The veteran breeder, judge and leadsman succeeds James Perrotti who had completed his two-year term.  He’s joined on the Executive Committee by Mike Cosgrove, 1st vice-president; Tom Kugler, 2nd vice-president, Tim Perrotti, treasurer; and members Roy Deniston, Cathy Galley, Regina Lundy and Bill Paddock.

Patsy Gifford leads the staff as executive secretary, with Michael McCaffrey as editor of the monthly NY Holstein News magazine.  A break-even budget of just under $450,000 was approved for the 1800-member organization, which conducts a full program of meetings, shows, sales and member education with a very active Junior Holstein organization which met the weekend before

The meeting was held as part of the two-day All-Breeds Convention, hosted by the Madison County Holstein Club on Jan. 20 – 21 with Mike Curtis and Chris Anderson as co-chairs and Amy Kelsey as the “go-to” organizer.  An estimated 150 attended. The Holstein Association USA Region 1 meeting was the opening event, held the afternoon of Jan. 20, followed that evening by the high averaging NY Convention ET Sale.  (See all-breeds blog at holsteinworld.com)

The All-Breeds Luncheon featured breed updates for Jersey, Brown Swiss, Ayrshire and Guernsey clubs.  The speaker was Dr Milton Sernett, retired history professor from Syracuse University who gave an interesting slide show on Gerrit Smith Miller, pioneer Holstein breeder of the 1860s, whose farm was in Madison County.

The evening banquet, always a highlight, provided recognitions for active and longtime members:  Jonathan & Alicia Lamb, Oakwood Corner Dairy, were named Outstanding Young Breeders; Dr Ben & Carolyn Turner, Maple Lane Manor Farm, were Master Breeders; and Sam & Gail Simon, were retired master breeders.

Well… Here goes nothing. We’re going vegan.

http://carrieisaacson.wordpress.com/

Here are the links of their daily updates for the week of going vegan.

( Carrie Isaacson and David Jones)

Well… Here goes nothing. We’re going vegan.

By now I’m sure you’ve heard. Carrie Isaacson and I are going vegan for a week. As I sit here over my extremely non-vegan breakfast of two eggs, a sausage patty and key lime pie yogurt (my favorite), it’s beginning to dawn on me how difficult this whole “going vegan” thing is actually going to be. My only hope is that my digestive system does not decide to go on strike for the duration of this challenge.
When one decides to go vegan, it is a difficult (and emotionally challenging) time, full of research, substitutions and the horrible realization that the few items you thought might fit this lifestyle and make your life worth living are probably not vegan. Let’s perform an exercise, shall we? Pull out a pen and piece of paper. Now make a list of all the tasty things in your life you assume to be vegan. Now throw it away. Because you’re probably wrong.
Here is a very short list of the things I once assumed were vegan, but are not: Read More »
